The Serea bike lock does not require a key or battery. It uses NFC technology – the same technology used for contactless payment. A physical key is therefore superfluous. The lock is controlled and unlocked exclusively via the Serea app. Users create an account there and connect their lock using the PUK code provided.

Once this is done, the lock is very easy to open: Tap in the app, hold the smartphone with the NFC sensor to the lock’s NFC antenna – click – and it unlocks. In addition to the unlocking function, the app also offers practical additional features. These include simple sharing of the lock with other people and – if the location is activated – an unlocking history that allows you to keep an eye on the use of your lock at all times.

How does it work without a battery?
Unlike many other smart locks, Serea requires neither rechargeable batteries nor batteries. This means: no recharging, no empty batteries in winter, no failures. But how is the lock supplied with energy? Only a very small amount is needed for the unlocking process – so little that the energy pulses from the smartphone are sufficient. In addition, kinetic energy is stored in a spring during manual locking. This energy supports the unlocking mechanism the next time it is opened.
