ROLSped – Pedal measuring system for bicycles and pedelecs

ROLSped is a pedal measurement system specially developed for light two-wheelers to precisely record the power applied by the rider in real riding conditions. The system measures the horizontal and vertical force components acting on the pedal using strain gauge-based sensor technology and combines this with high-resolution angle of rotation and rotation rate recording. This is used to calculate torque, cadence and power with an output rate of around 976 Hz.

A key feature of ROLSped is the high-precision synchronization with the ROLSbike measuring wheel system. All measurement components are precisely synchronized via GPS-based time references and a common 1 MHz clock. This enables a detailed, synchronous analysis of the entire drivetrain as well as existing control and assistance functions.

The pedal sensors are battery-operated and transmit their measurement data wirelessly to a bridge module, which not only receives the data but also synchronizes the measurement chain. Data provision and system configuration are carried out via a CAN-FD interface. Integration into a Shimano SPD clipless pedal system enables practical application.

ROLSped is particularly suitable for performance analysis, drive optimization and the development and validation of assistance, safety and comfort functions in the field of modern bicycle and e-bike systems.
